Proprio di fronte alla stazione ferroviaria di Granaiolo Fontanella, sulla linea ferrata che conduce da Empoli a Siena, all’inizio del centro abitato, sulla strada che attraversa la Valdelsa, provenendo da Castelfiorentino incontriamo un sobrio e semplicissimo cippo in pietra serena. Ben visibile e, se osservato attentamente in relazione al contesto in cui si trova, in stretto dialogo con il monumentale fabbricato del complesso ferroviario alle sue spalle. È un monumento molto particolare, che reca anche una significativa iscrizione:
“Il popolo di Fontanella volle eretto questo cippo alla memoria dei suoi caduti nelle guerre 1915-18 e 1940-45 con la viva speranza che l’olocausto di tante giovani vite susciti anche nei venturi concittadini doveroso compianto e li induca a fortemente operare a che fra le umane genti sia tutelata la pace, condizione prima di un vivere libero e civile. Febbraio 1955”. Dunque, ad appena 10 anni dalla fine della guerra, con il ricordo delle violenze, delle distruzioni, della morte, ancora vivo nella mente e nel cuore, anche a Fontanella viene presa la decisione di ricordare con un segno visibile e duraturo i caduti nelle due guerre mondiali. Particolarmente significativo il monito ad adoperarsi per la tutela della pace. Due guerre mondiali in trent’anni avevano lasciato un segno indelebile.
Fontanella memorial stone
Right in front of the Granaiolo Fontanella railway station, on the railway line connecting Empoli to Siena, on the outskirts of the inhabited centre, on the road that crosses the Valdelsa, coming from Castelfiorentino, there stands a very austere and simple stone, a cippus in pietra serena. It is clearly visible and, observed closely in relation to the surroundings, appears to match the monumental railway building behind it. It is a very special monument, which also bears a special inscription: “The people of Fontanella wished to erect this memorial stone in memory of their fallen in the wars of 1915-18 and 1940-45 with the ardent hope that the holocaust that took so many young lives will arouse due empathy and grief in future fellow citizens as well, and induce them to work tirelessly to ensure that peace be safeguarded among human peoples, the first condition of a free and civilized life. February 1955”.
Gedenkstein in Fontanella
Direkt vor dem Bahnhof Granaiolo Fontanella, an der Bahnlinie, die von Empoli nach Siena führt, am Ortsanfang und an der Straße, die von Castelfiorentino aus das Elsatal durchquert, stoßen wir auf einen schlichten und sehr einfachen Gedenkstein aus grauem Fels. Deutlich sichtbar und bei genauer Betrachtung fügt er sich gut in die Umgebung des monumentalen Gebäudes des dahinter liegenden Bahnhofkomplexes ein. Es handelt sich um ein ganz besonderes Denkmal, das auch eine bedeutende Inschrift trägt:
„Die Bevölkerung von Fontanella wollte diesen Gedenkstein zum Gedenken an ihre Gefallenen in den Kriegen 1915–18 und 1940–45 errichten, in der lebendigen Hoffnung, dass der Holocaust an so vielen jungen Leben auch bei künftigen Mitbürgern pflichtbewusste Trauer und Führung hervorrufen wird. Sie müssen hart dafür arbeiten, dass der Frieden, die erste Voraussetzung für ein freies und bürgerliches Leben, unter der Menschheit gewahrt wird. Februar 1955“.
